Microstock agencies license images with the Royalty Free, or RF license method, that basically means this: the price is dictated by the size of the image in Megabyte (or pixels, or inches or whatever!).
Royalty Free license is nothing new in stock photography. It existed for longtime, microstock just brought it to another (lower) level.
Basically this license permit the buyer to use the image indefinitely in time. This is an important concept to keep in mind as I'll explain about the RM license method below.
In opposition to RF is the so called Royalty Managed or RM license, that means a photo is paid per usage, not size. And the usage is restricted in some way.
The difference with the Royalty free license method is that with RM the image can be used for the time and for the purpose detailed in the license. Can be a usage for 6 month in all the world, for example, or for a week in US territory only. It may be for print or web, for a magazine internal page or book cover. The price is determined according these multiple usage factors.
Why Royalty Free became so popular? Simplicity of usage! With this kind of license you haven't complicated calculations to do, designers can use and reuse the same image also in future not paying for another license, mostly payment is straightforward: microstock agencies introduced the practical system of credits, that customers buy in packages or subscription for unlimited download of images on a month or year basis.
The photography cube image can be licensed at Dreamstime as usual.
